A story about a naive young boy named Christopher Chant. He lives at home, mainly with his mother, because his father is usually away. At night, he travels through different worlds where he meets many fantastic characters and personages, and when his unusual talents are noticed by his scheming Uncle Ralph, strange things seem to happen. When several accidents happen in which Christopher might have been killed, the chain of events are brought to the attention of his father. Christopher learns that along with his talents, come obligations, which is bad news to a boy whose only wish is to play cricket in peace.

Christopher Chant has always had the ability to visit other dimensions in his dreams - which is good, because his real life has never been very much fun. His parents fight constantly, and he's mostly in the care of a series of nannies, none of whom stay very long. When Christopher has what should have been a fatal accident, though, his abilities come to the attention of his father, then a great magician, then Chrestomanci himself. Only problem: Christopher isn't particularly interested in being the next Chrestomanci.
