She accepts a position as a manager of an all girls team who will plant vegetables for the war effort on an estate in the countryside. Billeted at the estate are Canadian soldiers - the Captain of which Gwen becomes interested in. The book details Gwen's discovery of a "lost garden" on the estate and the discovery and clean up of the garden coincides with Gwen's self discovery during the uncertainty of war time.
