The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove

This is a story about a the investigation of a town constable into the town's weird activities and its shady sheriff while magical events are going on around the town like a lizard creature which is increasing the sex drive of the city's residents and searching for its mortal enemy before going back into the sea. The story begins when Bess Leander is found dead and the town constable Theo Crowe senses that everything is not quite right with the situation which has been classified as a suicide. The investigation gets him asking about her medication from the town psychiatrist. The Sheriff gets to know about the investigation and convinces him to keep the investigation out of the public eye. At the same time, Val Riordan the town therapist is worried about the growing rate of usage of anti depressants by the people of the town.

At the same, there is a beast that is coming from the sea because it is attracted by the smell of depression from the town's people. It is also attracted by its old enemy who happens to be playing the blues at the bar. The lizard beast causes mood changes to an increase in sex drive among the town folk. It is also sex crazed by nature and tries to mate with a fuel truck which ends badly. The fuel truck explodes and the lizard is badly hurt. His gills are burned by the explosion and he disguises himself to a mobile home while he heals and makes friends with the town crazy lady known as Molly, who helps him out in the process.

The explosion makes things worse especially in the sex drive sector as more people in the town are having trouble controlling themselves. Theo is too distracted by the situation to continue with drugs and investigates the case more closely especially when a boy goes missing and he finds, Bess's widower with a waitress. Everything points to Bess death not being accidental. Bess's autopsy by the town nerd ‘Spider' also shows that it was definitely not a suicide but he warns Theo not to trust the sheriff. Theo confronts Joseph who leads him to a crack house and confesses to the murder and drug trafficking for the sheriff. After this, Joseph makes plans to kill Theo with a number of men from the crack den but it seems the lizard beast is always there in time and it eats the men and Joseph while Theo escapes.

The people of the town are drawn to the cave where the beast is holed up and Theo follows the sheriff there and he becomes trapped within the cave with the people .and the beast. The guitarist who is also the beasts enemy flushes the beast out and gives the guitar to Val's pharmacist who has a sea creature interest. The pharmacist is eaten and Val is in the clear now. At this time, Molly who has become the handler of the beast tells it to go back to the sea while Theo and Spider along with other witnesses bring the sheriff to justice and take him to jail.
Best part of story, including ending: I like that this is about a man who is able to put aside a drug habit and confront a corrupt leadership, while humorous magical things are happening all around.

Best scene in story: I like the scene in chapter 10 when Chloe, Val, the town therapist's receptionist is caught by her boss pleasuring herself in the reception area because of her out of control sex drive much like that of the other town residents. Val is befuddled and sincerely does not know whether to be amused or shocked by what is happening. This is one of the most humorous and awkward scenes.

Opinion about the main character: I like that Theo can set aside his addiction at least functionally so as to seriously focus on the investigation of Bess's death.
