Spargo eagerly follows numerous leads, some obtained through the police and others through appeals for information in his newspaper articles. He eventually ascertains that the dead man was a former resident of London who had travelled from Australia to England by boat with a case of diamonds and the intention of meeting up with an old acquaintance, Mr. Aylmore, now a member of parliament.

As more leads appear, Spargo soon realises the importance of the stamps found on the murdered man's person, leading him to question and grow suspicious of two unforthcoming residents of the chambers. The trail eventually leads him to a small Yorkshire village where all of his questions will be answered.
