Spurred on by matchmaking servants who think Jamie might settle Stephen down, the two find themselves increasingly attracted to each other. But Jamie has good reason for not wanting to be seduced: his own mother had been used and discarded by a nobleman, and it would shame him to follow in her footsteps.
Watching with interest is Stephen's paid companion, Julian, a gorgeous but just past his prime actor who doesn't want to lose his cushy position to the young Jamie.
Jamie, overcome by his feelings for Stephen, allows himself to be seduced while he still thinks he's nothing but a plaything to the other man, then flees Stephen's home for the streets of London.
