The Professor Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Professor

The Professor is a story of a central character, William Crimsworth as he attempts to make his own way into the world. William is an orphan, whose mother died in childbirth, and his two Lord uncles undertook his care, begrudgingly, of his education. Alone in the world and determined to make his own living by his own hands, William seeks out his only other living relative, a much older cousin brother who turns out to be quite the brute and offers him job as a clerk due to his jealousy. Mr Hundsen come to his rescue whose advice makes William leave England.

He reaches Brussels, where William quickly secures a position teaching English in M. Pelet's school and finally reaching in the neighbouring girls schools owned by Mlle Zoraide Reuter. Here initially captivated by Mlle, William begins falling in love with her, only to be heartbroken when he overhears her and M. Pelet talk about their upcoming marriage. He now treats Mlle Reuter with a cold civility. Reuter, however, continues to try to draw William back in, pretending to be benevolent and concerned. She pleads him to teach one of her young teachers, Frances, who hopes to improve her skill in languages. William sees in this pupil promising intelligence and slowly begins to fall in love with her as he tutors her English. Jealous of the attention Frances is receiving from William, Mlle casually dismisses Frances from her school and hides her address from William
The essence of the story, however, is how William makes his own way through the world with nothing but his own mind and hands and how he makes everything in his life fine and secured.

Best part of story, including ending: I liked this story because it shows the power of self motivated thoughts and how a person can climb the ladder of success.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene is in the end where the two lovers are united.
