Davina Morland is in Brussels where her brother, an army surgeon, has settled her while he prepares for war. A chance encounter leads to her being hired as a companion to Lady Amabel Fortescue. The reason she accepts the position is partly her growing friendship with Amabel and partly because Amabel's brother, the irresistible Lord Jamie Ashbourne charms her into accepting the position. When Jamie is seriously wounded in the battle of Waterloo, it is Davina who nurses him back from the brink of death. When his bethrothed breaks off their engagement after finding out that he will probably never walk again without using crutches, he proposes to Davina, knowing he must secure an heir. Davina accepts the marriage of convenience with her eyes open. A misunderstanding on their wedding night nearly causes a permanent rift in their previously friendly relationship, but once Davina realizes that it's Jamie's pride that stands in their way to happiness, she decides to do something about it.
