Emmeline Thistle is a Flatlander, or as they are derogatively called by non-Flatlanders, a dirt-scratcher. Emmeline was born with a bent foot and therefore she is an outcast in the Flatlander community. One day, all the unmarried men in the Flatlands are taken away by the King's men to fight in his army. Soon after, Emmeline's hometown is destroyed by heavy floods and Emmeline is washed away into the Wanderlands, where Flatlanders are not allowed. A Wanderlander family, the Oaks, secretly take Emmeline into their house and Emmeline begins to fall in love with the Oaks' son, Owen. While living with the family, Emmeline discovers that she has the power to churn milk into chocolate. Soon, everyone from the King of Anglund to petty criminals in the kingdom are after Emmeline and her long adventure leads her to find secrets about herself, her heritage and her society.

The plot is unique and the characters are three-dimensional. Plus, Emmeline is an admirable heroine despite her disability.

The scene when Emmeline first learns of her true powers because this particular scene is soaked with romance and magic.
Opinion about the main character:
Emmeline is strong, independent and fierce. At no point does the reader think that she is weak, not when she is held captive by a criminal and not when she is being manipulated by an evil queen.
