Charity Duncan has come to him asking for assistance for her impoverished family. Instead, Anthony asks her to marry him. He will take her home, present the unsuitable young woman to his father and then leave, set up Charity in a home on her own and never provide an heir for the ducal title.

Charity agrees because she loves her brothers and sisters and this is a chance to provide them with a comfortable life. But her love and her character soon cause Anthony to fall in love and realize that Charity is not an unsuitable wife. But how can he get his revenge on his father unless his new wife remains only a temporary wife?
