Patience Harrington is the daughter of a world-renowned antiquarian, and when her father and his team is invited to travel to Blackfield Castle to catalogue the collection, he is unable to travel due to an injury. In his place, he sends Patience to head his team, since she is an knowledgeable as him. Patience is in need to leave the harsh world of the ton and their malicious gossip due to her a couple of social mishaps.
Patience and her team arrive at gloomy Blackfield castle with the open disapproval of Lord Blackfield. Thomas decides to ignore the group until he suspects Patience of being a spy after his newest "monster" invention. Lord Blackfield decides the best course of action is to seduce Patience to find out her goals, only Patience is not a spy.
As they pair begin to spend time together, they both find themselves becoming deeply attached to one another, not to mention the explosive passion they feel toward each other. As Thomas begins to realize that Patience is innocent, she finds out what his motives for pursuing her were, and the couple must fight their way past misunderstandings and the constant threat of the real spy, who feels that Patience is in his way of his goal.
