Their vacation affair goes beyond anything Caren could ever have imagined and as her vacation draws to a close she realizes she is falling in love with Derek. Instead of waiting until the last day she flees to avoid an uncomfortable goodbye. The morning after she arrives home she is awakened by two FBI agents at her door and suddenly her life is spiralling out of her control. She finds out that Derek is actually Prince Ali Al-Tasan and her job at the State Department is in jeopardy when she is suspected of passing secrets about OPEC.
To save her from prosecution Derek offers a solution. Marry him and his very powerful father will protect her. Caren finds herself being swept along into a marriage that very day and then she is taken off to live on Derek's Arabian Horse farm in Virginia. She couldn't ask for a more attentive husband but still there has been no mention of love. When Derek's half brother is killed Caren fears he will be called to Riyadh as the heir apparent and she will be left behind just like Derek's American mother had been years before. Refusing to face this she flees again.
