His life has seemingly no meaning, until he rescues an apparent illegal alien; a beautiful Mexican woman who has come across the border via the ocean. He bands together with her to find her assailants who nearly killed her, causing her to flee across the border. These assailants are working for a larger entity...one that is obviously related to one of the companies that has placed factories in Mexico and is poisoning the land, the water, and the people who live there.
Sam is not merely a burned out surfer turned drug dealer...he is one of maybe two time surfers who ever surfed the "Mystic Peak." This forgotten, beautiful life is brought back to the present by Magdalena as she quietly questions him and gives him the human feeling that he has lost.
The two assailants are products of the maquiladoras that are poisoning everything around them. They were once meaningful and productive men, but have gone bad due to their circumstances and the graft and greed of their country's politics. They are trying to silence Magdalena for many reasons, but mostly for the money they will receive when she is dead.
