All her life, Bryony has "spoken" to a secret "friend" who she now considers her "lover", although she doesn't know who he actually is. There is a history of this special "talking" in the family and this is skillfully woven into the story as Bryony struggles with doubt and confusion about her own and her lover's identity, all the while trying to find the truth about her father's death.
