Brady Garriston is a rock and roll singer, trying to settle down though he doesn't appear serious about it. A return from a spontaneous trip to Europe doesn't sit well with a lawyer he's been trying to romance, and she lets him know that she's not interested in being with an immature man. Brady is upset, yet unwilling to change his spots just yet. The breakup has contributed to a bad case of writer's block, which Brady wants to cure so he can resume his career.

A chance encounter with a small town tourist in a NYC restaurant gives Brady the idea of going incognito to a small town in hopes of rejuvenating his creativity. At random he selects Dareville, Virginia, where he will live as Gary Stone. Little does Brady know, but his ex-girlfriend's cousin, Ellie Shaw, lives in Dareville and is wishing for a wild man like Brady. Upon arrival, she sees through his disguise, but plays along with him as she seduces him.
The two fast become a couple, yet each fears revealing their secrets: Brady/Gary revealing his true identity, Ellie revealing she knew all along. Both are relieved to have the truth out in the open, though it leads to more complications they must overcome.
