Tune In - The Beatles: All These Years - Vol. 1 Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Tune In - The Beatles: All These Years - Vol. 1

This is the first of a three-volume history of The Beatles, depicting them in their earliest years, from 1958 up to the end of 1962. This exhaustive biography of The Beatles tells the real story of the rise of one of the most famous musical groups in the world. The story begins with a family history of each member of the group, going back to their ancestral roots. The story of The Beatles is a long and complicated route, containing many fortunate steps along the way, some of which the members of the group, themselves, were never aware of having taken place. There are pages and pages of footnotes and enjoyable scenes all compiled from other well-documented books and personal interviews.

The Beatles began their band in grammar school when John Lennon formed a couple of different musical groups consisting of his friends, playing skiffle, a type of music that uses everyday objects to produce sound, such as a tea chest. John eventually is introduced to Paul McCartney through a mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan, and is asked to join the group now called The Quarrymen. Paul introduces John to his friend, George Harrison, who also joins the group. The drummer who stays with the group (which now changes its name to The Beatles) for five years is Pete Best, a boy who lacks a lot of talent but whose mother owns a club, The Casbah, where The Beatles can play on a regular basis. Stu Sutcliffe, a friend of John's, joins the group to play bass guitar.

The Beatles get a long-term gig in Hamburg, Germany, where they perfect their act through long, long hours of playing. Stu dies an early death, The Beatles change their hairstyle, and Pete Best is exchanged for Ringo Starr on drums, as new manager, Brian Epstein takes over the band's direction. The volume ends just as the group is accomplishing greater and greater fame in England, with the world soon to be at their feet.
Best part of story, including ending: I really liked this story because it gets into the deeper nitty gritty of how The Beatles came to be who they ended up becoming: the world's most talented and famous band. The circuitous and often just plain luck they encountered is written here in great detail that is enjoyable and enlightening.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene is when Brian Epstein first encounters The Beatles singing at The Cavern in Liverpool, and he understands immediately what their potential is and how far they might go.

Opinion about the main character: The main character(s) are depicted as much as possible in their true lights, without glossing over their faults. This is something I liked very much, yet was a little disappointed to hear about my musical heroes' flaws.
