Ugly Ways Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Ugly Ways

When Mudear Lovejoy passes away, her family gathers in Mulberry, Georgia, to plan her funeral and lay their mother to rest. Betty, Emily and Annie Ruth are Mudear's daughters. Betty lives in the family's hometown and has a beauty salon business, Lovejoy 2. Emily lives in Atlanta and works as a researcher. Annie Ruth is the fragile sister who has suffered a nervous breakdown and works as a television newscaster. The girls' father, Ernest, has spent most of his life supporting Mudear and working in the chalk mines. Mudear was an opiniated, bossy, sassy woman who ruled her roost with an iron fist and a razor sharp tongue. Forever chastising her girls for their "ugly ways", Mudear was housebound and perpetually glued to the television screen. As the Lovejoy family mourns Mudear each family member vents their anger towards their overbearing mother and brings forth memories from the past.
