Dr. Scarpetta soon started to receive e-mails from the killer who goes by the name of Deadoc with photographs of blood-ridden crime scenes and dismembered limbs. Unexplanable death of a woman at Tangier Islands revealed a mutant-strain of killer virus on the loose as Dr. Scarpetta noticed the similarities of the blistered skin from both of the bodies of what appeared to be smallpox. Deadoc continues to haunt Dr. Scarpetta as more cryptic messages were sent to her through the Internet.

Along with her trusted colleague and long-time friend Police Captain Pete Marino and Lucy, her niece and a computer whiz-kid who works for the FBI, a plan was put to place to nail the killer by enticing 'him' to start conversations with Dr. Scarpetta in the AOL chat rooms.

Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta seems to be the target of a viral murder spree. A murder victim is discovered in a landfill with missing limbs and a head. Another death has been discovered on Tangier Island. The latter seems a natural death, yet Kay knows the two cases are related. After being exposed to what she fears i a viral epidemic and the source of the latest murder and death, she must be quarantined for days . It is now that she has nothing but time to communicate with the killer via internet. She fears the murderer is one of her own, a doctor who seems to hold a grudge against her. To prevent exposure to others, time is of the essence. This could prove impossible unless she can discover how the murderer is using his weapon.
