Molly Bell Redwine, the main character in this story, was taught by her difficult mother that family is and means everything. But what seems like an instant, Molly discovers quickly that things can change without any warning. Her husband of about 23 years leaves her for a younger lady without warning. Feeling devastated by her fallen world, molly takes refuge with a friend on Martha's vineyard where she tries to come to terms with her rotten life and everything else. When the summer season comes to a close, she decides to stay on in this very different world, and rents a small cottage on a remote up-island pond.
As Molly's stay lengthens up island, the distance widens between her and her old life in Atlanta. She slowly lets go of her old notions of family and begins to become part of a strange and very real-new family. As the vineyard winter closes, unexpected events change her life including the possibility of a new love.
