The book tells the story of Rose Hathaway, a Dhampir (half Vampire-half human), trying to protect her best friend, vampire Lissa Dragomir, in the vampire equivalent of high school. Rose Hathaway is an ordinary dhampir - half human and half vampire, who are born in order to protect the vampires - or so it would seem to be. Her best friend, Lissa, is one of the princesses of the Moroi (the good vampires) society, and after a horrible accident, the only Dragomir left alive. Lissa suffers from nightmares and mood changes, going stronger and stronger the more she stays in the academy, and in order to protect her, Rose escapes their school with her.

After they are found and returned to the school, Lissa and Rose are attempting to get used to the academy again. While Lissa manages to find her way back into the Moroi society rather easily and even makes a new friend, Christian, Rose has to undergo special lessons with another dhampir, Dimitri, in order to make sure she can still function as a guardian. At first Rose hates these lessons, but as time goes by, she realizes she doesn't only like the lessons, but her teacher himself. Dimitri himself seemed to have fallen in love with her as well.
At the same time, it turns out that Lissa can heal other beings and even bring them back to life, if it hasn't been too long since their death. Her uncle, Victor Dashkov, who suffers a rare syndrome, decides to kidnap her in order to use her healing powers. He causes Rose and Dimitri to hook up while kidnapping her, resulting in the fact that almost nobody notices her disappearance. The only one who notices is Christian, her new boyfriend.
When Rose and Dimitri realize they have been manipulated, they set out to find Lissa. Eventually, thanks to Christian's help, they manage to find and rescue her. They all return to the academy, where they can continue on with their daily lives.
Best part of story, including ending:
I liked this story because it's a well written fantasy story, which is creative and interesting to read. It's mainly for young adults, but it is easy to enjoy in any age.
Best scene in story:
My favorite scene was the scene in which Rose and Dimitri hook up - simply because I've been waiting for that since the very beginning.
Opinion about the main character:
I love that Rose is loyal and caring. She's always thinking about Lissa. She's also mature in comparison to her age.
