Diana goes to a small town under a fake name in order to find out what happened to her younger brother. Her brother, Brad, had left home in order to escape his father who wanted him to be a lawyer. Brad had faithfully written to Diana twice a month, telling her where he was and how he was doing. All at once his letters stopped coming after a very impersonal post card. Diana went to live with the Nicholsons, pretending to be a landscape expert, who knew quite a bit about roses. She was to help them re-do their backyard into a Victorian era garden setting. Diana began getting flashes into the past, and odd apparitions, as well as the scent of flowers, and the sound of music, began appearing. She finally figured out what happened to her brother, but was shocked to find out that the blame for his disappearance was in the hands of someone she loved greatly.
