Ian Cameron was rescued from a harrowing imprisonment in central Asia. The torture left him sightless in one eye and impotent. Intending to resign from his army in colonial India, he first delivers a bible to Laura Stephenson, the niece of his fellow prisoner who was executed. When Ian meets Laura, born Larissa Alexandrovna, she is alone and destitute after the death of her stepfather. Laura, for reasons she will not tell Ian, fears physical contact with men.
