Ian Cameron was rescued from a harrowing imprisonment in central Asia. The torture left him sightless in one eye and impotent. Intending to resign from his army in colonial India, he first delivers a bible to Laura Stephenson, the niece of his fellow prisoner who was executed. When Ian meets Laura, born Larissa Alexandrovna, she is alone and destitute after the death of her stepfather. Laura, for reasons she will not tell Ian, fears physical contact with men. Because they both feel affection for each other, Ian proposes a marriage of convenience giving them both companionship but no threat of sex.

Ian must return home to Scotland but first they try to solve coded secrets hidden in the bible. The secrets are the key to avoiding the outbreak of war. As they journey through India, Ian discovers his impotence was temporary and he wants to make love to his wife, but first he and Laura must overcome her fears of intimacy.
