12 year old Leigh is crushed when her beautiful, youth seeking mother leaves her much older father to marry the fantastically rich and handsome Tony Tatterton, who is years younger than she. Leigh moves with her mother to the castle-like mansion called Farthinggale, complete with pools, horses, an English maze and a little cottage behind it. There Leigh meets Troy, Tony's precocious four year old brother whom Tony has cared for since their parents died. Leigh misses her father, but enjoys the lavish life as a Tatterton.

Tony Tatterton owns a company that makes toys for the rich, collectibles that the ordinary could never afford. When he asks Leigh to pose for his new portrait doll that is destined to become famous, Leigh is excited, until she finds out that Tony wants her to pose in the nude. He begins touching her, and uncomfortable with this, she tells her mother who doesn't believe her. Overcome with lust, Tony rapes Leigh brutally while her mother is away.
When Leigh starts feeling sick and checks her calender, she realizes she is pregnant with Tony's child. Her mother blames her and says she teased and seduced Tony, and he couldn't help himself. Scared and alone, Leigh runs away, and meets a handsome young man named Thomas Luke Casteel, who offers to marry her and be a father to her child. Living in a wooden shack with no plumbing or electricity, Leigh feels more love and happiness than she could ever hope for, but tragedy will strike.
