Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942) was the third and favourite son of Queen Victoria. A godson of the Duke of Wellington,he followed a military career for much of his life. He entered the Royal Military Academy as a boy of 16, served in Egypt, where he fought at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882, in Canada, where he was Governor-General, 1911-16, and in India, where he opened the new chambers of the Indian legislature in 1921.
As a sharp-eyed observer of events around him during a long life, he was on close terms with many people outside the royal family, among them Lord Wolseley, President Taft, Nancy Astor, Rudyard Kipling, and the Queen's controversial Highland servant John Brown.
He married Louise of Prussia in 1879, and it is through their elder daughter Margaret, Crown Princess of Sweden, that the present Queen of Denmark and King of Sweden are descended. This book looks at relationships with his family, with the army and with politicians throughout the British Empire.
