Grace runs down to the hotel lobby and sobs to the desk clerk that she has been kidnapped. Jack tells the desk clerk that his wife is a retard. Because Grace is hysterical, the desk clerk believes Jack.
Jack says he will kill Grace if she does not obey him and then he will go back to England and torture Millie. (Did I mention anywhere in this summary that they were all from England? I probably should have mentioned it at the beginning. Oh well, too late for that!)
Grace agrees to be his slave. She obediently puts on a bikini and agrees to be locked on the balcony of their hotel room all day while Jack goes out around town. She agrees not to call for help during this time even though she could easily escape that way. This is example #2 of how Grace accepts being Jack's slave.

She is such an obedient slave that Jack even lets her stay in the hotel room unlocked by herself in the evenings. After several days of being an obedient slave (example #5), she hears a spanish guy talking next door. On an impulse she bangs on the door and asks for help. The door opens and it's Jack. He was playing another joke on Grace. Jack loves to give her avenues of escape and then to crush her hopes.
On the way back home Grace gets mysteriously drugged. We are not told how this happens, it just does. When she wakes up she is at the airport in London and tries to call for help, but is still so drugged that she talks like a retard and people just laugh at her.
Jack takes Grace to their new house. He locks Grace in a room without books or a radio or any distractions. He says that because Grace has been bad that she cannot visit Millie for a month. Grace is devastated.
Jack has Grace communicate with her friends only by email and watches as she writes messages (willing slave example #6). Grace volunteers to do this so her friends will not become suspicious. She cooperates with the deception that keeps her enslaved.
Jack gives Grace a book supposedly from her friend Esther that has a hidden message in it asking if Grace needs help. Grace figures out that this is another trick that Jack is playing on her. This is the first and almost the last time in this book that Grace demonstrates having a brain.
Grace asks Jack if he goes to Thailand to squirt other guys in the buttocks. Jack says he is not interested in sex, but goes to Thailand to watch people being tortured.
