Plot Summary Part 2

Dougal says that if Claire wants to be protected from the British, she must marry a Scottish man, specifically Jamie.

This is totally ridiculous. At this point in time, the British rule over the Scots. Being a Scot is no additional protection for Claire, as we will see shortly. The whole argument for her marrying Jamie is very contrived.

Nevertheless Claire agrees to the sham wedding.

Not only that, Claire agrees to consummate their sham marriage. So, supposedly Claire married Jamie merely to protect her from the British. If it's a sham marriage, then why is she having sex with him?  We are given the weak excuse that....

“I want this marriage consummated, wi’ no uncertainty whatsoever,” Dougal instructed me firmly in an undertone. “There’s to be no question of it bein’ a legal union, and no way open for annulment, or we’re all riskin’ our necks.”

Come on! How could the British possibly know whether or not Claire and Jamie have had sex! This is totally contrived. Instead of having a real, organic romance, the plot we are asked to believe is one of a forced romance, but it doesn't feel forced at all. It just feels like an excuse for Claire to get Jamie to bone her.

This whole arranged marriage plot line is a way for Claire to have an adulterous relationship while married to Frank, in a way that lets her escape moral responsibility for her actions. She's forced into it, see?

Jamie gets ready to bone Claire, leading to this funny exchange:

“Does it bother you that I’m not a virgin?” He hesitated a moment before answering.

“Well, no,” he said slowly, “so long as it doesna bother you that I am.” He grinned at my drop-jawed expression, and backed toward the door.

Time for sex!

I pulled his shirt loose at the waist and ran my hands up over his chest, circling his nipples with my thumbs. They grew hard in a second, and he crushed me suddenly against his chest.

“No, don’t worry; kiss me again.” He did, this time slipping the straps of the chemise down over my shoulders. He drew back slightly, cupping my breasts and rubbing my nipples as I had done his.

“Tell me if I’m too rough, or tell me to stop altogether, if ye wish. Anytime until we are joined; I dinna think I can stop after that.”

Can you imagine Jamie thrusting into Claire vigorously and Claire saying, "Wait! I changed my mind! Can you stop now?"

In answer, I put my hands behind his neck and pulled him down on top of me. I guided him to the slippery cleft between my legs.

“You have good wide hips; ye’d be a good breeder, I expect.”

Jamie is treating Claire like a cow, heh heh.

“Oh, all right. I didna realize that ye did it face to face. I thought ye must do it the back way, like; like horses, ye know.”

The whole "Jamie is a virgin and knows nothing about sex" routine feels about as genuine as "Claire is forced to marry Jamie but doesn't want to", which is to say, not at all. Jamie asks Claire for advice on how to have sex which is totally ridiculous.

“You don’t need to do anything special,” I assured him. “Just go slowly and pay attention,"

Finally Claire gets fed up with Jamie's false coyness and starts sucking on his cock.

After a few moments, I began to use my teeth, pressing progressively harder until he drew in his breath with a sharp hiss.

Jamie wants to lick Claire's v_gina, but she is worried that her v_gina smells bad.

I turned my face into the pillow, which felt cool against my flushed cheek. “Well, if you must know,” I muttered, “I don’t think—well, I’m afraid that it doesn’t—I mean, the smell…” My voice faded off into an embarrassed silence. There was a sudden movement between my legs, as Jamie heaved himself up.

Jamie’s breath was alternately warm and cool on my skin.

Meanwhile, a British patrol interrupted them during sex, and Jamie and Claire killed them. This was a sexual turn-on for Claire.

Jamie knelt beside me, pulling me out from under the corpse. We took each other then, in a savage, urgent silence, thrusting fiercely and finishing within moments, driven by a compulsion I didn’t understand, but knew we must obey, or be lost to each other forever. It was not an act of love, but one of necessity, as though we knew that left alone, neither of us could stand.

Anyway, after having sex, Claire decides to return to the stones to go back to her own time. She doesn't love Jamie yet, she just really, really, really likes the sex. But on the way to the stones she is captured by Captain Randall, who always seems to be nearby.

Randall slowly drew the knife in a semicircle under one breast. The homespun came free and fell away with a flutter of white chemise, and my breast sprang out.

He pressed himself between my legs, scrabbling with one hand to raise my skirts while the other fastened on my bared breast, rolling and pinching. I kicked frantically, but my skirts got in the way. He grasped my foot and ran a hand up my leg, pushing damp petticoats, skirt, and chemise out of the way, tossing them up above my waist. His hand dropped to his breeches.

Then Jamie comes by and rescues her before Randall can finish boning her. That always seems to happen every time Randall tries to bone Claire.

Claire and Jamie have pretend-fights. I call them pretend fights because they seem to be fights over nothing. Their only purpose seems to be to allow them to have passionate make-up sex, because everyone knows sex is more passionate right after you fight and make-up.
