Sugar by Deirdre Riordan Hall Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Sugar

Plot Summary Part 4

She never tries to call him. Never tries to write him. The impact of this startling information is exactly zero.

Sugar steals Even's diary, and reads about how much he loved her. He loved her so much that he never tried to bone her. Are you believing any of this?

Sugar moves out of her mother's house. She tells her Mom that she was pissed off that Caleb tried to bone her, and that she is going to live with her brother Henry. Since Sugar will no longer take care of her, she has called in government social workers. Now the US taxpayer will take care of Sugar's Mom. A happy ending for all! Except the American taxpayer.

Sugar takes Even's motorcycle and rides it. I think this act is the closest she ever took towards having sex with Even, having something between her thighs that belonged to Even. Even's drunk dad who can't spell gives Sugar Even's ashes and tells Sugar to dump them somewhere, if her fat ass doesn't crush her motorcycle first.

The end.

Literary Criticism:

This was an awful book, in so many ways. For starters, not much happened in the story. Sugar is fat. She gets a platonic boyfriend. He dies. Sugar loses weight and moves out, the end. How exciting is that? Not very.

The characters were all wooden and two dimensional. At times they were totally unbelievable, like Even, the perfectly sensitive platonic boyfriend.

The only plot twist in the story was Sugar's very unlikely encounter with her Uncle and learning her father was still alive. Once she had this information, she did nothing with it. So what was the point?

The book ends with Sugar reading Even's diaries describing how much he loved her. We already knew that. The authoress of this book doesn't know how to write interesting plots, she doesn't know how to write characters, she doesn't know how to write compelling character interactions, and in fact, she doesn't know how to write much of anything.
