The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Themes

Some women like abusive boyfriends. Ana wasn't attracted to Oscar but she was attracted to Manny, who beat her and called her a dumb v_gina. According to this book, if Oscar had beaten Ana and called her a dumb v_gina, she would have let him bone her.

Some women like big, painful p_nises. Both Lola and Beli had sex with men who had big, painful p_nises. "Aldo had a long, thin p_nis that hurt Lola but she enjoyed it anyway." Some women need pain to have pleasure.

The daughter of a doctor shouldn't play doctor. La Inca repeatedly tells Beli not to spread her legs like a slut because her father was a doctor. I'm not sure what one has to do with another, but La Inca seems to think there should be some connection.

Choose your sex partners wisely. Most of the people in this book choose their sex partners poorly, choosing people who have important boyfriends or girlfriends who have them beaten to a pulp. It's better to have sex with someone who doesn't have friends who could beat you up.

There is no such thing as curses. We are repeatedly told in this book that the misfortune that strikes everyone is due to a curse, but the events of this book show otherwise, that the bad things that happen to the main characters are due to their poor choice of actions. If they didn't try to bone (or get boned) by the wrong people, they would have ended up ok, and as for Alabard, if he had had the common sense to flee the country with his family, he would have been ok too.

Only morons will die for sex. Oscar dies right after boning his first girlfriend. Oscar sounds happy from it in his letters but any sane person knows that sex is not worth dying for. Oscar looks like a moron for letting himself be killed for a few seconds of squirt squirt squirt.
