He kisses her and she says they should get engaged. Sylvester agrees, but says he has to see her v_gina first before they can get engaged. Margaret doesn't understand why Sylvester has to see her v_gina before getting engaged, but Sylvester says it's perfectly normal.
In one of the funniest lines in the book, Margaret says, "You want to see my underthings?" Underthings, heh heh.
Sylvester promises he only wants to look at her "underthings". Sylvester strips off Margaret's clothes, and, true to his word, only looks. For about 2 seconds! Then he bones her.
Sylvester says to make a commitment to each other they have to have sex. That's how it's done! He thrusts into her, and squirts her real good. Margaret notices a mysterious liquid pouring down her legs from her "underthings". In another great line, Sylvester says, "You've got a really good pussy. Fresh."

At this moment Salome shows up. Sylvester tells her that Margaret injured herself horseback riding, but of course Sylvester was the only one doing any riding, heh heh. When asked why Margaret was horseback riding in the nude, Sylvester said that she had trouble breathing and he had to loosen her clothes, heh heh. The rape is not funny, of course, but Sylvester's ridiculous cover story is.
Salome tells Sylvester to get the f out of there. She takes Margaret home and says, "Lift up your skirt! We gonna wash you real good!"
When Henry Hardin finds out what happened, he picks up his gun in preparation to shoot Sylvester. But Salome convinced him otherwise. If he shot Sylvester, everyone would know that Margaret had been boned and she would be damaged goods, no one would want to marry her. This was back in the late 1800's when being a slut was not fashionable like it is today.
Henry dropped the gun and started to sob like a little boy.
Margaret finds out she's going to have Sylvester's rape baby. Having a baby without a father in Arkansas would make Margaret an outcast. So Henry rushes to find someone to marry Margaret, but no one is interested in her because of rumors she is black. So finally Henry convinces a very low class white trash guy named Jebediah Slocum to marry Margaret immediately. You know that Slocum is evil because Slocum is basically the words "Slow...Cum" mashed together, not an appetizing prospect.
Margaret is not eager to marry Jebediah, but is forced to by her father. That way when the baby is born they can say the rape baby is really Jebediah's. Henry offers Jebediah's father a lot of money to convince his son to marry her.
When Bertha finds out that Margaret is pregnant, she says that Margaret is a whore who spread her legs and wanted to be boned. Remember that Bertha doesn't like Margaret because she knows that while she must pretend that Margaret is her daughter, she is actually Salome's daughter, a constant reminder of Hardin's infidelity. Bertha says, "What was Sylvester supposed to do when you threw yourself on the ground, gapped your knees wide open, and waved your legs in the air? You beggin him to come in and help himself! You lowdown slut! " Heh heh heh.
This is a GREAT scene because it shows dramatic tension between two characters.
Then Bertha tells Henry that when he bones Salome it sounds like two grunting hogs rutting around in pig slop. Heh heh heh.
Henry takes a washcloth and shoves it in Bertha's mouth. I can't stop laughing as I write this!!!!
He pulled Bertha's pants down and started to spank her with a belt. Wack! Wack! Wack! He spanked her over 20 times, each time recounting an incident when she was mean to Margaret as Bertha's ass turns a rosy red.
An example: Henry reminds Bertha that she once said that Margaret's breasts were growing so large that Bertha said they looked like a rack on a black girl. Then he spanked her with his belt again. Wack! Wack! Wack!
Henry threatens to spank Bertha again if she is ever mean to Margaret. Then he tells her exactly what to tell her white friends about Margaret. Bertha repeats what Henry says word for word, like a dazed, broken slave girl. This is a very well written scene!
Then, as a final punishment, Henry invites his brother James to bone Bertha, handing her off like a used sex doll.
Margaret doesn't want to marry Jebediah. She says he is ignorant white trash. She says she can't be pregnant because she is certain you need love to create a baby, and there was no love when Sylvester boned her. Margaret's naive understanding of reproductive biology is very funny.
Henry tells Margaret the truth, that Salome is her mother, that she is half black, and that Waylon and Tom-Tom are her brothers. Margaret looks like she's about to throw up.
Now that Margaret is seriously confused and disgusted, Henry knows the time is right to marry her to Jebediah against her will. And he does.
There's so much manipulation in this story, it's really dramatic!
When Margaret gives birth to her rape baby after only being married for six months, Jebediah's father Jacob figures out that Henry had Margaret marry Jebediah to hide the fact that Margaret was having a rape baby.
