The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Expatriates

Plot Summary Part 3

Wait, I already revealed that. Sorry, there's no more story for Hilary.

Mercy tells Charlie that she is pregnant with another man's baby. That seems to end their relationship. Why this storyline about Charlie was put into the story I don't know. You might say that Mercy's baby prematurely aborted Charlie's storyline, heh heh heh.

Mercy tells her dumb Korean mom she is pregnant. Her mom is overjoyed and doesn't ask who the father is. Tell me, does any REAL mother act like this?

Mercy goes to a doctor who tells her to take vitamins that will constipate her, heh heh heh. The doctor inserts what Mercy calls a "plastic dildo" into her v_gina which is like a baby spy camera. Mercy by calling it a dildo obviously sees this as sexual.

David, who is rich, gave her a lot of money to pay for the childbirth. He didn't express any opinion on whether Mercy should have the child, indeed, once she tells him she is pregnant, he never bothers to talk to her again for the rest of the book. He's just the guy who pays the bills.

Mercy gets a part time job working at a party, but when she gets there she realizes she is at Margaret's house. Margaret sees Mercy and has a mental breakdown. Mercy runs away.

Hilary talks to David. She tells him she is adopting Julian, and wants him to pretend to still be happily married to her so she won't have any trouble adopting him. David agrees, and tells her that he has impregnated Mercy. Instead of being upset, as a normal wife would, Hilary shows concern for Mercy, which makes zero sense.

David again shows a curious lack of interest about what is going on with Mercy and his baby.

Margaret seeks Mercy out. Why we don't know. She should still be angry with Mercy for losing G. But Margaret is no longer angry with Mercy and is even kind and interested in Mercy's upcoming baby. This makes zero sense.

Margaret decides to finally stop being such a bitch and stop being mad about G and move on with her life. Yes, that's the end of the big character arc for Margaret, what you spent over 300 pages reading to get to.

Mercy gives birth to her bastard baby. Her breasts are "rock hard melons", heh heh, and her private parts are "shredded" and her belly is loose and flabby. Her baby tries sucking on her tits but they are too hard!

Suddenly, Hilary and Margaret appear in the hospital. They have a lesbian moment where they masturbate Mercy's tits so the baby can drink the milk. Hilary and Margaret show great concern and kindness for Mercy.
