The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Marriage of Opposites

Plot Summary Part 2

One of the neighbors happens to see Frederic boning Rachel. For some reason this is taboo. Since Rachel was married to Isaac, and Frederic is Isaac's nephew, Rachel is seen to be committing incest because she is being boned by her dead husband's nephew, even though she is not, by blood, related to Frederic. Anyway, most of the rest of the book is spent fighting with the other Jews on the island who are horrified that Rachel and Frederic are committing incest... even though really, they aren't.

Sometimes the kids walked in on them when Frederic was sticking his schlong in Rachel's v_gina and Rachel had to lie to them and tell them she was being boned by a ghost, heh heh. This was the funniest part of the book.

Rachel married Frederic but the local Jews would not recognize it. Then she became pregnant which became awkward since her marriage was not recognized. None of the Jews would talk to them and they had to get their own bagels and cream cheese. When the local rabbi  refused to marry them, they appealed to the super-Rabbi in Denmark, and the super-Rabbi in Denmark gave them permission to marry, so they did. Then the townspeople wrote their own letters to the super-Rabbi and the super-Rabbi in Denmark changed his mind and they became officially unmarried again.

One of Rachel's babies was sick so they went back to the Magic Herb Man. Magic Herb Man rubbed some leaves to rub on the baby's blanket. They paid him in gold. How nutty is that?

Finally after a few years the local Jews changed their mind and accepted their marriage. No reason was given for this change. Rachel was no longer extremely ostracized, instead she was only average ostracized by the local Jewish community. Don't ask me why.

Jestine gets a letter from Aaron, telling her that Lyddie, the baby he stole from her, is having a great life in Paris and has forgotten all about Jestine, heh heh.

Years pass and Rachel has a son named Jacobo. Rachel is being a real bitch towards Jacobo because he has no interest in the family business and wants to paint. An old Jewess named Mrs. Halevy befriends Jacobo. Rachel thinks Mrs. Halevy is a real bitch because (a) Mrs. Halevy was a close friend of her mother and anyone who was a close friend of her mother, a real bitch, also must be a real bitch and (b) Mrs. Halevy was a leader of those who ostracized Rachel for marrying Frederic.

But Mrs. Halevy invites Jacobo over for tea and they become friendly. Mrs. Halevy wants to reconcile with Rachel but Rachel isn't so interested. However, Hannah, Jacobo's sister, wants them to reconcile, because Hannah wants to be boned by one of Mrs.
