The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Rosie Project

Plot Summary Part 4

Rosie never finds out who her real father was, the ostensible purpose of this entire storyline.

The end.

Literary Criticism:

This was a bad book.

I've read bad books before.

But this book wasn't merely bad; it was something altogether above and beyond bad.

This book was irritating. It had a storyline whose ending was obvious from the first chapter, and it tried to be cute, when it most definitely wasn't.

There was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, where the robot on the show, Lieutenant Commander Data, had a romance with a real woman. The episode was cute because Data didn't have emotions and tried to be analytical about having a girlfriend, much as Don did in this story. The difference is that Data was supposed to be a robot. That's why that story was cute. But Don is not a robot, and yet we are to believe that he is so naive that he doesn't realize it when he has willing and eager v_gina staring him in the face. That makes the story so incredible as to not just be unbelievable, but actually insulting to the reader.

Look, you, the reader! A woman wants Don to stay overnight at her apartment and Don doesn't realize she wants sex. Hahahahaha!

Look, you, the reader! A woman invites herself over to dinner at Don's apartment and talks about p_nises and Don doesn't realize what she is after. Hahahahaha!

Not.

Going for cuteness, and failing, just makes this entire book feel irritating. It's as if the book was geared for ten year olds, who might laugh at a scene, yelling, "The man does not realize the girl wants him!" But as a book aimed for adults, it is a total failure.

I picked up this book completely fooled, believing it would be the story of a truly intelligent person using an intelligent method to find an equally bright girlfriend. I expected to be astounded by the main character's intellectual abilities. This book could have been fascinating; this book could have been unpredictable.

Imagine my tremendous surprise, and disappointment, to find that the story was actually about a retarded person who we are supposed to find "cute"... rather than just plain pathetic.

I am sure this book has a million positive reviews on Amazon.com. Sheep will eat grass. 5 stars! Baaaa!
