The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Plot Summary Part 4

Monique, if you've forgotten who she was, is the black chick who is sitting throughout the book listening to Evelyn's life story. So now we find out why Evelyn picked Monique to tell her story to and get rich from it.

Evelyn feel's guilt that Harry accidently killed Monique's father. But why would Evelyn feel guilty? Evelyn didn't kill Monique's father. It was Harry. Evelyn didn't have a relationship with Monique's father. That was Harry. Evelyn didn't let Monique's father bone her in the ass. That was Harry. Evelyn's guilt makes no sense.

And then when she finds out, Monique gets angry at Evelyn. Why would Monique be angry at Evelyn? Evelyn never harmed her Dad. This is the "emotional payoff" of the book and it completely is without any logic.

Anyway, Monique forgives Evelyn (for what?) and finishes writing the biography and takes the money.

Evelyn also shares a letter that Monique's Dad wrote Harry saying that while he really enjoyed having Harry's penis in his large black ass, he was going to stay with his wife and child (Monique at the time). This is supposed to make Monique feel good--that despite the fact that her dad was an ass pirate, he still preferred to stay with her and her mom. If you were Monique, would this make you feel good? Perhaps not.

Anyway, to end the story, Evelyn and Celia get married, kind of, pretending to get married in their home. Evelyn's daughter Connor dies of the titty sickness.

We find out that Evelyn has the titty sickness too. Even though she is in the very early stages of it, she decides to kill herself, which makes no sense.

Evelyn kills herself. Monique published the biography.

The end.

Literary Criticism:

This is not a terrible book. I have read terrible books before. In fact, most works of "literature" I read are terrible. This is not one of them.

But while this is not a terrible book, neither is this a very great one.

1) The character motivations are not realistic. Celia breaks up with Evelyn, twice, because Evelyn slept with a man in a film and slept with another to protect their cover as lesbians. These are not reasons to break up with someone. Then Evelyn felt guilty and Monique felt angry at the end about the fate of Monique's ass pirate dad. These emotions were inappropriate because Evelyn was not involved with Monique's bone smuggling dad. When the characters act unrealistically, the whole story suffers.

2) Thinly characterized husbands. Each husband, except for Harry, had a paper thin personality. Don liked to beat women. Max wanted a trophy wife. Ernie was a retard with a car. Because their characters were paper thin, once Evelyn dealt with their one attribute, it was the end of each story/marriage. If the author had made each husband more complex characters, it would have been more interesting.

3) Overall story. The overall story was kind of thin as well. Basically, Evelyn was a lesbian actresses who had a long succession of fake marriages to cover her carpet munching activities. While this clearly was a story, it wasn't a very complex one. More complexity, more plot twists, and more substantial characters would have made for a better story.
