Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Silver Linings Playbook

Plot Summary Part 4

Pat runs away. Then he gets beaten up by a mugger.
Wack wack wack!

Then Pat goes to a hospital and gets treated for his injuries.
He has a flashback to the day he came home and he found Nikki and some guy nude together in the shower. Pat remembers beating the crap out of the guy. Wack wack wack!

But then Nikki hit him on the head, and then his head fell hitting the faucet, which is what turned him into a retard. He blacked out and never got a chance to see if the guy's p_nis was bigger than his, which might explain a lot of things.

Tiffany writes Pat a letter explaining how she became a retard.

Tiffany had a husband named Tommy who loved to bone her. In fact, he loved to bone her so much that he banged her several times every day. Tiffany's labia and v_gina started to get sore so she told Tommy not to bang her so much. Tommy got very upset. Tommy, who was a policeman, went to work in his patrol car, but on the way stopped to buy Tiffany some sexy underwear. On the way back from the sexy underwear story Tommy stopped by a stalled car on the road and Tommy was killed by a bad driver.

Tiffany felt very guilty. If only she hadn't complained about the sex, Tommy wouldn't have bought her sexy panties, and he wouldn't have stopped that driver and been killed. This guilt is what turned Tiffany into a retard.

To try and cure her retardation, Tiffany tried to have sex with as many guys as possible, to pretend she was still having sex with Tommy. She found a lot of guys who were willing to bone a retarded girl, heh heh.

That's what she tried to use Pat for at first. But then she became friends with Pat and realized she was in love with him. She still wants him to bang her, but not for a Tommy fantasy.

Pat's brother Jake took him to where Nikki, the real Nikki, lived. They parked across the street and watched as Nikki conveniently came out on the front lawn and played with her husband and kids. They looked so happy. To Pat, this was the happy ending of his movie. The happy ending of seeing his wife, impregnated by another guy, playing with another man's kids. That made Pat very happy. Are you following any of this? I'm not.

Then Pat goes home and decides to bang Tiffany because, after all, she's still available.

The end.

Literary Criticism:

I thought the first third of this book was HYSTERICAL! I was laughing and laughing and laughing! I was laughing so hard I could barely type as the author described how Pat did all his funny things, completely clueless of how ridiculous they were. That was funny. That was really good.

Then the book became serious and dull. A lot of time was spent describing Pat achieving something great by dancing at the retarded dance competition. That was not such a great achievement. A lot of time was spent describing Pat watching football games with his friends and being patronized by them because he was retarded. That was dull too.

The part with the letter between Pat and Nikki was interesting, but the end of the book the story was a letdown. We are told Pat, who was obsessed with Nikki, would be happy to see Nikki with another guy, with another family. That makes absolutely no sense at all. The ending was completely ridiculous and unbelievable.

It would have been better if the second half of the book had been much like the first. Show Pat getting a job and getting into trouble dealing with coworkers and customers while being clueless. Show Pat entering into relationships, have women use him for sex while being clueless. Show Pat being used by criminals to commit crimes while being clueless. That would be entertaining! The best part of the story was watching Pat being ridiculous without realizing it. Once that part of the story ended, the rest was rather dull, trite, and in the end, unbelievable.
