The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Silver Linings Playbook

Themes

Football is a sport for retarded people. It struck me how Pat's brother, father, and friends acted like retarded people when it came to football. They got drunk and yelled and became violent and yelled simplistic chants like retards. Then it became obvious that football is a sport that is perfect for retarded people. That's why Pat got along so well with the football crowd.

Crazy chicks need sex to cure mental illness. Tiffany felt she needed a lot of random p_nises to cure her of her depression. This is understandable. Women who are upset often need something soothing between their legs to make them feel better.

Crazy people should be heavily drugged. Pat starts out the story being violent and dangerous. But as soon as he is given enough tranquilizers to knock out a shetland pony, he becomes tame and docile. That's good. Crazy people should be heavily sedated.

Huckleberry Finn is not code for "let's have sex". Pat thinks that when Nikki suggests he read Huckleberry Finn that she is secretly hinting that they have sex. Nikki tells him that he is wrong. If a girl suggests you read Huckleberry Finn, that does not mean she wants to have sex with you.
