Astrid gets mauled by a vicious dog owned by an illegal alien from Mexico. She has scars on her legs, arms, and face and looks like a freak now, and people stared at her cut up face in school.
When Marvel, her latest foster mom, finds out that Astrid has been spending time with the black lesbian whore, she is outraged. She demands to know whether Astrid munched on Olivia's carpet. She beats up Astrid. Wack! Wack! Wack! Then she has Astrid reassigned to another foster home.
Astrid gets sent to a Spanish home run by Amelia. Amelia has a lock on the fridge and only gives one meal a day so Astrid must go through the garbage can at school to find food. Students see her doing this and laugh at her. Astrid is also forced to watch Amelia's smelly underwear by hand. If Ray were there he probably would have tasted it, heh heh.

Claire quickly warms up to Astrid, showers her with fancy clothes, love, affection, and attention, and treats her like a beloved daughter. Astrid in turn comes to love Claire.
But Claire is weak and unstable. A LOT of the book is spent exploring Claire's depression. If this interests you, you will love this book.
When Claire takes Astrid to visit Ingrid in prison, Ingrid is jealous that Claire has won Astrid's affection. She tells Claire that her husband Ron is boning other women. How can Ingrid possibly know this? It is totally unexplained.
Anyway, Ingrid's suggestion to Claire destroys her. Claire becomes depressed, overdoses on drugs, and kills herself. Astrid blames Ingrid for Claire's death and is very angry with her.
Oh, I forgot to mention, before she dies, there is a very funny scene where Claire gives money to a homeless man and then the homeless man tells Claire he would like to bone her, and then asks Claire to bend over and let him smell her hair. She does. The homeless man smells her hair but then does not try to bone her. It's totally unrealistic.
Astrid's next foster mom is a russian lady named Rena who sunbathes topless, and shares cigarettes and beer with Astrid. She sells things at flea markets. She insists Astrid sell her fancy clothes and takes a cut of the proceeds.
