Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Young Jane Young

Plot Summary Part 2

There are several chapters of discussion of this. It is very, very exciting if you like verbal diarrhea about every detail of a stranger's wedding plans.

Frannie is marrying a guy named Wes West. Wes tells Jane that he knows that she is really Aviva the cocksucker. Jane tells Wes that he knows Frannie's secret, which we find out at the end of the book (she killed some people while she was driving a car). And so they blackmail each other to keep each other's secret.

Then suddenly the book shifts perspective again to Ruby, Jane's daughter. We are forced to read a series of childish emails that Ruby writes to an Islamic pen pal in Indonesia that goes on for many pages. Skimming through the childish writing, we learn that Jane is planning to run for mayor of the small Maine town she lives in.

We also learn that Jane told Ruby that her father was dead. Ruby was suspicious because Jane had no photos of her father and would not even tell her his name for a long time. Finally Jane says Ruby's father was a man with the ridiculous name of Mariano Donatello.

But then Ruby figures out that Jane, her mother, is really Aviva Grossman. She looks up photos of Aviva from her cocksucking days and realizes that Aviva is Jane. Ruby learns that Jane/Aviva was famous for sucking a congressman's cock and that she is probably his daughter.

When Ruby finds out she is the daughter of a world famous cocksucker, she throws up. This is the funniest part of the story. Ruby even finds her Mom's blog, and reads about her Mom sucking the Congressman's cock.

She pulls up a photo of Congressman Levin, and realizes she looks like him. He's still a congressman.

Ruby confronts her mother, and calls her a slut. Jane denies that Levin is Ruby's father, saying she never had "that kind of sex" with him, heh heh.

Ruby says her mother disgusts her and is a criminal. Jane says she committed no crimes, that she only did immoral things, heh heh. This confrontation, where Ruby learns that her mother is a world famous cocksucker, is, dramatically speaking, the best part of the book.

Ruby feels that Jane, who is running for Mayor, is lying to the public by not telling them that she is a cocksucker. Jane says she is not lying, she's simply not disclosing it.

And then Ruby asks the $64,000 question: why is Jane running for Mayor when the increased scrutiny she is being put under will probably reveal her cocksucking past? Jane does not answer this question.

In fact, Jane is running against Wes, the guy who knows her past and is only silent because of Jane's threat to reveal the secrets of Frannie, Wes's wife. Why would Jane want to risk being exposed when she changed her name and moved across the country to hide her past? It doesn't make any sense, and is never convincingly explained. It's one of the weakest parts of the plot.

Ruby is angry at Jane and yells, "FUCK OFF, AVIVA!", purposely calling her by her old cocksucking name.

Ruby, who is only a child, decides to run away to Florida to meet Congressman Levin, who she thinks is her father.
