Young Jane Young by Gabrielle Zevin Summary Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Young Jane Young

Plot Summary Part 3

She books a flight somehow and flies there.

The story switches perspective, again, to Embeth, Levin's wife. Embeth has cancer, and we are treated to pages and pages of that, which is boring, since we don't care about Embeth. Then there are pages and pages of Embeth dealing with details of her life being married to a Congressman, and we don't care about that either. Get on with the central story of Jane, Ruby, and Levin, please!

Ruby tries to meet Levin but is intercepted by Embeth. Embeth learns Ruby's identity, but instead of kicking her in the ass and telling her to get the f out of his office, Embeth takes Ruby to the movies!

This makes zero sense. Embeth has a great reason to hate Ruby, because she is a reminder of her husband's infidelity with Aviva. But instead of hating her, Embeth takes a liking to her. This makes absolutely no sense and is not realistic.

Ruby wants to meet Levin, but the police catch her before she can, and she is taken back to her mother. The dramatic scene of Ruby confronting Levin is never related, because it doesn't happen. What kind of writing decision is this by the author? A disappointing one, I'd say.

The story shifts perspective AGAIN, this time to a flashback of Aviva's time sucking Levin's cock as an intern and later an employee in his office.

The romance starts when Aviva kisses Levin on the lips.

What? Just like that? Yes, just like that. This author doesn't know how to write romance. Characters simply kiss other characters without any buildup or explanation.

Levin responds and before long Aviva is sucking his cock. You know, I have written "sucking his cock" so many times in this summary that even I am getting tired of writing "sucking his cock" even when, to summarize the story, I have to write "sucking his cock".

Aviva is upset that Levin doesn't want to stick his cock in her v_gina. He only wants her to suck on it.

We learn, once again, that Levin claims he will leave his wife after the election. We learn, once again, the story of the car crash that exposed their affair. This section of the book is boring because it rehashes the beginning of the book, albeit in greater detail. We learn that Aviva changed her name to Jane (we already knew this) and moved to Maine to become a wedding planner (we already knew this), and gave birth to Ruby (we already knew this). We learn that Jane was surprised how much shit Ruby produced (we didn't know this). We learn that after Levin broke up with her that Aviva masturbated a lot (this we also didn't know).

The only useful thing we learn in this rehash is the identity of Ruby's father. It's some guy named Jorge who works for Congressman Levin. Ruby has sex with him. Why? There is no why. It just happens, like everything else in this story. Jorge is Ruby's father. Ruby never learns this, robbing the story of even more drama.

Jane continues her run for Mayor. Ruby sent an anonymous letter to the local newspaper revealing that Jane is a famous cocksucker. The election is held. We never learn the results.

The end.

Literary Criticism:

The idea of this book was a good one.
