Nick Storie is a homicide cop. People are dying from some exotic poison in food from Watson's Market. It appears to be the work of some kind of insane serial killer, but Nick doesn't think so. He believes it is directed at one or two of the victims, and the killer miscalculated.
Due to the nature of the poison, there is one very likely suspect - but that suspect was 150 miles away at all critical times.

This is the 13th book in the CD Grimes series. "Bottleneck" is a somewhat disturbing work, because Moulton bases most of his mysteries on things on the news. This one begins with the murder of the woman who runs the community center in a mobile home village and leads to a kiddie porn ring.
CD has children of his own, and this is much too close to home. He uses the Crane facilities (he is 51% owner of the Crane conglomerate) to find where the pornography... Deadly Operation
Serena, from book 7, is head nurse at Mercy ICU. Patients are dying, and she discovers there has been deliberate mis-medication, so calls Nick.
The patient who died last was writing a book exposing a crooked investment scheme by a doctors' group. The chart that had the deadly medication order is switched, but there was something about that chart that could expose the killer. There were two people who might have spotted that evidence - then one of them... It Happens
An entire family of people are murdered in their sleep, and CD Grimes is called to investigate in his role as state grand jury marshal. He finds the dead are truly despicable. No one in the rural area cares that they are dead.
CD meets a variety of characters, such as the gay man who everyone likes. He certainly has motive - but he was with two bikers at the time, and they verify his alibi. Can they be trusted?

Sheriff Stewart calls CD at 3:00 AM because a woman claims to have witnessed a murder - again. She is a very powerful political mover and shaker, so Len can't tell her she's bonkers. CD determines that it was some kind of weird stage show - but why?
Then the woman actually is murdered. Her husband is in Tallahassee at the time, so he can't be the killer, unless he's found a way to get the length of the state, commit a murder, and return in one night.
