Fyodor Dostoyevsky: A Writer's Life
Dostoyevsky was born in 1821. In 1839 his father was murdered by his serfs because of his cruelty. By this time Dostoyevsky had moved to St. Petersburg with his brother and entered military engineering school. In 1842 he was commissioned a second lieutenant. Two years later he left the military and began writing “The Poor Folk.”
