Emmeline Thistle is a Flatlander, or as they are derogatively called by non-Flatlanders, a dirt-scratcher. Emmeline was born with a bent foot and therefore she is an outcast in the Flatlander community. One day, all the unmarried men in the Flatlands are taken away by the King's men to fight in his army.
