This is a retelling of Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth, updated from Wharton's end-of-the 19th century story to today (1999). However, where Wharton's protagonist was a woman who went from riches to ruin because of societal pressures, Janowitz's character, Florence, has no one but herself to blame for her demise.
