vinegar hill was a great novel with many hidden symbols. like all american writers, ansay shows the journey of the greir family through society vs. individuality.
ellen and her daughter revolt against the church because it symbolizes conformity and society. the church forces them to do things they do not want to (ie: amy having to ask to be forgiven for her journal that had questioned God. ellen having to be married to james because they spent a night snowed in in his car, even if nothing happened. )
ellen's friend barb stands for individuality and hope.

If you want to read about a very dysfunctional Christmas, read "Vinegar Hill."

I absolutely loved Vinegar Hill. I thought the way the story just kept you wondering what was going to happen next was interesting. I also thought that the main character was very strong willed, but in a tight place. I am trying to read all of Ansay's books because I like the way she writes. So keep up the good work!!!!!
