... why isn't his poetry better known? I read his poetry in the late 80s before I knew who he was and I was amazed by it. I've shared individual poems with friends of mine but it's impossible to find books and the world seems oblivious to it.

Paige hate to tell you this but Christy Brown died in 1981. But if was still alive he probably would have been proud of the movie of his life and he probably would have written more books and poems and would have painted again. I have 3 or4 of his books that he written before he passed away.
