Cry Freedom tells the story of the friendship of neutral newspaper editor Donald Woods and the pacifist Anti-Apartheid activist 'Bantu' Stephen Biko. The friendship that Woods feels for Biko after initially being wary of him makes him a target for the South African security police and he is subsequently banned after Biko's funeral. Biko himself having died at the hands of the authorities. The film tells of his original theories regarding blacks in South Africa during the apartheid era, his meeting with Steve Biko and his escape from South Africa after Biko's death.

The reviewer seems to forget to say that the reason Stephen Biko died was Because of sustained blows to the head he received from the security police !!!
