The story of Big Fish reminds me of the idea that there is no reality, only perception. The truth is what you percieve to be true, whether it is or not. Ah, that is why life is so complex. What is real?

I am currently teaching this book to summer school students. I am focusing on the point where Edward tells William that "...a man's stories make him immortal..." (Wallace 20). I think that line can account for many of the stories, as well as touch on the issue of the relationship between the father and son. William suddenly needed those stories to keep the same reality he knew when his father was with him. I'm not sure if this is helpful, but it might be a different spin.
Please suggest any other ideas for a unit on this book! I am using it immediately following The Odyssey to continue the themes of the epic and myths that shape life.

I recently showed the movie Big Fish to one of my classes to illustrate Magical Realism. I am looking for discussion ideas to relate magical realism to the movie.
