Deric Longden Message Board

chris cook posts on 6/24/2013 6:04:09 AM All Derics little furry friends (and Thermal's sultana) will be crowding round him now, making him welcome in whatever place the good people go. Deric, your books helped me through several bouts of long term pain...little gems from a gentle funny man and we are all devastated that there will be no more. May Aileen and his family find comfort in the fact that he has no more pain to endure. I am so very very sad.xx
claire martin posts on 6/24/2013 5:45:57 AM Dear Annie Thank you for letting us know the sad news we all knew would come but we're dreading. I feel I have lost a beloved friend and send my deepest condolences to you and your family. Many years ago I found one of Deric's books in a bed and breakfast , I ended up "borrowing" it so I could finish reading and that was the beginning....... I have read all the books over and over and will no doubt read them many times again , bless you Deric and thank you for sharing your life with us xxx
Bea posts on 6/24/2013 3:43:45 AM Hi Aileen, Annie and family, there are no words that can give comfort, but please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Deric will live on through his writing, through your very personal memories, and through his writing - which will bring blessings to many, many more folk still to discover his books, and to all the 'old' fans! I'm sure he had a very loving, warm reception committee waiting for him. [I can just 'hear' him write - not too warm!] Much love, Bea [in South Africa]

Lee posts on 6/23/2013 11:39:29 PM Such a sad loss ... I am privileged to say that I had the opportunity to meet Deric and Aileen when, as a creative writing student I tracked them down and invited them to the first ever Huddersfield University Literary Festival. He will be deeply missed.
Jan Tenzer posts on 6/23/2013 7:57:05 PM My sincere condolences to you and your family Annie. Although we knew from Deric's last post that this day would come, it's still a horrible shock. We're so saddened by his passing but so lucky to have known him through his books and his amazing presence on this on this site. My life has been enriched since his words came into it. Thank you for taking time out of your grief to share the news with us. God Bless you, and may Deric forever rest in peace. Jan
Susannah posts on 6/23/2013 7:49:22 PM I feel truly sad , a light has gone out today. He was a gifted writer who could see the sparkle in amongst the humdrum of daily life. and an exceptional, kind and funny man who will be missed. My sympathy to all his family especially Aileen and thank you Annie for letting us know at this sad time. Xx
Matzukaze posts on 6/23/2013 7:42:53 PM So terribly sad to hear about Deric. Sending all my love to his family and friends at this time. Deric's huge talent for writing has left the world with a remarkable gift and certainly one that will stay with me forever. I grew up reading Deric's books and was luckly to meet the man himself on several occasions. They say that you should never meet your heroes. Deric is and always will be one of my heroes and is the only one I've met who lived up to and surpassed my expectations. Such a warm chap with time for everyone and a lovely smile. Wishing his family strength during this sad time and I hope you can take comfort from the fact that he is so well loved. Also thank you to Annie who took the time to let us know.
Ally Young posts on 6/23/2013 7:29:03 PM I am so shocked, as a big fan of Deric's I was dreading the news. I feed the neighbour' cats next door to Deric and Aileeen and had a little chat with them in between Christmas and New Year. Deric joked that the family he'd just waved off in the car were heading off for a break from looking after him. So so sorry for the entire family, I only knew him to say hello to occasionally but would have loved to have known him properly. RIP Deric you will be missed x
Sheila posts on 6/23/2013 7:25:59 PM I also sent him a request on this message board for an autograph and then promptly forgot about it because I didn't think he'd answer. About a week and a half later I came home to find his postcard in the mail with a personal message. I had it framed with a picture of him and Thermal. I feel sad now when I look at it.
TonyB posts on 6/23/2013 7:17:25 PM This is a testament to the character of the man we now mourn his passing. He wrote about himself and his situations, leaving little clues dotted throughout his writing about where he lived. A couple of months ago I decided to piece these clues together and cyber stalk him. I wrote him a letter telling him what I had done using Google maps etc never dreaming that I would receive a reply. Bearing in mind this was very recent, I received a postcard with a picture of thermal on the front and a hand written message on the back correcting the post code! I will cherish this always, sent from a very generous man that loved people. I will miss him because I feel I knew him and his books were like personal letters to me. I cannot contemplate what sense of loss is being experienced by Aileen and their children and my heart felt sympathy goes out to you.
