Dear Mr. Resident F.M.J. Scholar,
Parris Island is in South Carolina,
(near Beaufort), not North Carolina.
The weapon used in the boot camp
segment of the movie is an M-14.
The M-14 is a 7.62mm magazine fed shoulder weapon. It was replaced
by the Colt M-16 (.223 Cal.).

It is about the brutalisation of conscripts to the eventual misapplication of American force in Vietnam. That cornered platoon tries to call out all the air power and armour that could be mustered just to deal with a lone sniper and when they eventually do find him, it is a young girl who the protagonist murders (that is not in actual combat).
