Jack posts on 9/15/2007 7:57:18 AM Of course Cassius was Scipio's son! Xerxes was just an alias. Nut Ball, no one cares. Cheese man, put me down for some mozzarella and some Velveeta. Marc, Pound doesn't want to exterminate the Rebs. There's a big difference between the US occupation and the Freedomites in that the Rebs will be spared the rod if they behave themselves, in fact their quality of life will drastically improve, whereas the blacks were dead no matter what they did, unless they resisted, so that the harder they fought the likelier they were to live. Finally, a general observation: no matter how long the sensible people stay away, this place never changes a bit, does it?
Stone By Day posts on 9/15/2007 1:05:09 AM Cassius's father was named Xerxes. I don't know who Scipio is; maybe you're thinking of another book?
Marc posts on 9/14/2007 3:54:19 PM I was surprised to see how Jake Featherston died—I thought he would have perished while firing ‘at open sights’ over a 105 at US tanks instead of being killed by Cassius, the son of Scipio and Bathsheba. I hope against hope that his mother and sister managed to escape the ‘murder factory’, but… The way the camp commandant Jefferson Pinkard met his fate is interesting—I thought he would have gone down shooting, too. However, the mass firing-squad ‘executions’ of Southerners would, I fear, do nothing but enrage the survivors and keep them shooting at the US troops until the last man, woman, and child was killed. Lt. Michael Pound better realize that he is little, if any different, from Jake Featherston, in his desire to exterminate the Southerners. However, “We won, they lost.” is probbaly going to justify just about anything.

nut ball lives posts on 9/12/2007 9:29:46 PM been with the Fam; In the HouseTruck preparing for the fullfillment of prophacy; it could be a worse case senario for the TL-191 confederacy if a KKKlike Freedomite insurgentcy occures with whole families dressed in white robes. Worshiping pictures of Featherstone. preparing to die as people bomb sacrifices to their false god, even the little kids. In OLT on the other hand satan's puppet George W. Bush and satans cyborg Cheany will soon be deposed by the hand of god and the democrats will be defaeted as well. You have been informed; It is now Spoken
Feather the Stone posts on 8/26/2007 10:49:48 AM I wondered if post-WWII German (or Japanese) history could have lessons for the TL-191 CS. Up until now, all there is is Morrell's "Equality" leaflet... Makkabee, you think that there's as much chance of a good as of a bad future; judging by what Turtledove had in IatD, the chances of a happy outcome looked few and vague (Truman's speech in Florida with some Confederates applauding; Jorge turning in Mr Quinn in Baroyeca): too many comments "they all hate our guts and always will" and "you Yankees are as bad as they always said you were" (hostage killing, and incidents like refusing to feed a starving boy, radicalizing "moderate" Confederates), too many people bombs and car bombs, apparently without indications that things are getting better. It doesn't look the US is doing in the former CS anything other than what they'd been doing in Canada (only more extreme) since 1917, so why should it work any better? To me, the chances of a good outcome look pretty dim. Maybe Turtledove actually couldn't imagine positive measures that could work. Maybe bringing more Yankee settlers to the South... (I had thought it might be a good idea to also "re-import" Blacks, from Haiti or Cuba, or even from Africa, using immigration incentives: free land in the South, money, etc., so as to have a population that is guaranteed of never collaborating with Confederate diehards. This idea also pleased me as a way of making it impossible for heartless Confederate diehards to say that Featherstone 'had at least solved the Negro problem'...).
Jack posts on 8/26/2007 4:30:04 AM The Japanese have always been good assimilating external influences in a way that is compatible with their core cultural identity. Ever since they opened up to the modern world, they've also been good at knowing which way the wind is blowing -- other than the Axis, they've picked winners in almost every international geopolitical dispute since the Meiji Restoration. And one look at continental Eurasia would have told them a US-dominated world had more to offer them than a Soviet one.
