Jared posts on 10/13/2005 10:40:50 AM it seems that after reading this, the theme is to show people how we risk our lives for things that in hindsight seem so trivial. The main caracter in this essay goes out onto the window ledge to retrieve a sheet of very important research he had done on advertising. while out there he becomes over come with fear then he is forced to look down while picking up the paper. when he returns to the window to his apartment, he finds that it is closed and he is trapped 11 stories up on lexington Ave. he then tries to get attention; but to no avail. the author then had him over come his fears and punches in the window, knowing that if he doesn't break the glass on his first try the rebound will knock him off his perch. he succeeds and goes in. he puts his now saved paper back on his desk and weighs it down with a pencil. the story ends as the main caracter leaves to go meet his wife, and as he goes, the paper flies off the desk and out the window again. Jack Finney shows great writing prowess through this. the reader is dragged along in the emotional termoil but in the end, the paper just flies away and it is all for nought. quite ironic and amusing, bottomline, a very good read. also, it has very good subliminal messages and an underlying meaning.
