Thanks for the good words on the Pit Dragon books.
As to Johanna--she is not able to speak because she, like the others of her family,turned into deer when she went into the forbidden part of the forest. All the clues are there--the mother's warnings, stories of family disappearances, family name (French for deer), the change in pronouns halfway in the story as she travels looking for the doctor.They are subtle,but there.
And the story was originally published in an anthology called SHAPESHIFTERS.

Dear Jane, I'm a teacher of English in a university in China. Johanna is one of the texts I'm going to teach. I'm now preparing the lesson and found it not easy to understand the story. My questions include (1) what do you want to tell in teh story Johanna? (2)I talked with my colleagues about the ending of the story and they all felt it hard to understand--why couldn't the girl speak up when the doctor called out to her? Why didn't the doctor recognize her even when she was standing in the puddle of light? Many thanks. zhanglian China

Dear Jane,
I would first like to say that I am sorry for your loss and that I wish to give you my condolences. Everyone loses a loved one and it is never easy. On a happier note, I would like to tell you that your -Pit Dragon Chronicles- are some of the best books I have ever read. I found them years ago and since then I have read an re-read them many times. I eagerly await the chance to read -Dragon's Heart-.

The only thing about Dragon's Heart on my website is the announcement that I have put it aide while my husband was struggling with his disease. It's on the WHAT'S NEW page.

thank you my names Draconic ((look it up if you dont know the term))well Iv read your books from the pit dragon cronicles. your stories are some of the best fantasy books Iv read. I can tell your book dragons heart will be awsome . Id think it would be cool if jakkin andakki's blood was acidic like the dragons. just a thought I had .I am a fan of most fantasy books((as long as there is a dragon involved in the main story plot ^-^ ))
but yours are of the best .I hope you finish the book!

I am off to Scotland on Tuesday for six weeks.(We own a house there.) Lots of legal entanglements--too boring to mention--But I am hoping to write, too.
